Ten of my favorite in game items

I love things rs gold. Truly I do. Only specific things, though. Over the last year I have doubled my efforts to catalog most of the best things in my life, from pictures and artwork to writings and songs I have played on. It's a sort of meta-hobby. As part of the effort I want to organize many of my favorite MMO in-game items, simply because I have played MMOs for so long and they are such a part of my life. I have a lot of favorite items, but some tend to stick out in my memory like a favorite smell or place.

After I finished an initial list of MMO items (it was well over 50 items in the beginning), I was surprised at how much variety there was in the items and in the games I listed. I think it reflects my character a lot, but also shows that I am a sentimental plod most of the time. I cut the list down to these 10, but I am sure I will wish to adjust the list again in the future. Feel free to add your own favorites in the comments section!

My Astral ship in Allods Online comes out only once in a while. It's a beauty, all right, but in more ways than one. It not only shows how cool Allods Online has always been but also shows how cool MMOs can be. See, the Astral craft are not just some bulky linear transports. No, these ships travel through the space that surrounds the floating islands that give Allods Online its unique name. Within this Astral you will find demons, dungeons, and places to explore. You and several of your friends can jump on board and control the aspects of space-travel -- from steering to scanning -- all in real time. You'll shoot massive cannons at space demons and even jump from ship to ship in PvP combat.

On top of that, the ships are mobile, beautiful fortresses. The entire thing is customizable and can be outfitted with many types of weapons and items. My ship, called TheGreatestEver, is just pretty to look at. If you want to see more, check out my livestream with the devs.

Looking good is important, but so is looking familiar. I love to make a character in a game that looks or acts as I do in real life. Eden Eternal's mousey race the Zumi is more adorable than I am, but with a push of a button I was able to outfit my main with a pair of cool glasses. At first I didn't like the spindly design on the side, but now they work perfectly. Maybe I'll have to buy some in real life to match my avatar!

Technically this entry breaks the rules of my list. When I summon a Lightning tank in PlanetSide 2, it appears from thin air, while most of these other items on this list are more "solid" and are in my character's pocket or bank forever. Still, the Lightning is my baby. I've kitted mine out with cool camo and a nice devil's head logo. I have probably spent more certs on her than on my character and continue to try out new fittings almost every time I play.

I don't use the Lightning as much as I used to since I discovered the sheer fun of mowing down enemy players with a personal turret, but the Lightning is probably the coolest vehicle I have ever owned in an MMO, other than the Astral ship.

This Mabinogi toy is awesome. Not only is this cardboard tube sword a brilliant in-game item, but probably every one of us has wielded one in real life at one time or another. This one item bridges the gap between reality and game so perfectly and subtly. It's items like the cardboard tube sword that make me smile, but they also make me wish that these MMOs would never, ever close. It makes me happy to think that there is a digital version of one of the world's most universal toys. Unfortunately, items in Mabinogi break down with use, so these type of special items cannot be repaired. When I use it, I do so sparingly.

Excuse the name, but Poopy was my first horse in Ultima Online, my first MMO. It was nearly 14 years ago when I tamed the little brown horse, and to this day one of my list's holy grails is a screenshot of Poopy. I have no idea what happened to him, unfortunately, even though I still have my original account and reactivate it at least once a year.

In The Chronicles of Spellborn, the emphasis on gear was lessened because you could use the same item for as long as you liked by switching out Sigils, gems that gave the item new characteristics. I used several weapons, but one of my absolute favorites was a simple starter dagger. It looked amazing and has always made me wish that more MMOs allowed players to use the same weapon for much longer.

I got this awesome multi-use axe for being a subscriber to RuneScape, one of the best sandboxes I have ever played. I stumbled across an NPC who was using it, and upon investigation, I found out that by signing up for membership I would get the same axe. I renewed my membership immediately. The axe is great because it acts as a hatchet, pickaxe, needle, tinderbox, chisel, knife, and low-level weapon all at once. Sure, there are better versions of all of those, but I don't care because none of them (that I know of) comes in this cool all-in-one package. Members can get the axe after finishing a tutorial.

Ah, Mektoubs: Ryzom's elephant-horse-thingies that act as mounts and pack animals. I never named the one I owned for years before the great re-launch and server merge, but he took me around the planet of Atys for a long, long time without dying. Oh, they can die; you'll lose them if you don't work your way back to their corpse within a certain amount of time. The mounts and "packers" also stay in the world, waiting for you to come back for all time or until they are killed. I once kept my Mektoub waiting for months, alone and hungry in the game, while I tried other titles. I lost him when the servers were merged.

Do you need more spaceships in this list? Fine. Once, years and what seems like a lifetime ago, I won an EVE Online player-hosted story contest. A player put up a heck of a prize for the winner: a beautiful, golden Navy-issued Caracal. After winning, I put the thing into my hangar and never took it out; I was simply too scared. I played way out in 0.0 space and was blown up all the time, so losing that lovely gift was not something I wanted to do. I could have sworn it had a golden hue to it. I asked our resident EVE Online expert Brendan Drain, and he let me know that it appears that it lost its golden hue likely due to a graphics upgrade.

I eventually sold her when I left EVE Online for a while. As with Ultima Online, I still check in on this game, and every time I really miss this specific item. I should have kept it after all.

If you are my age (three guesses as to how old), then you were alive during the original Battlestar Galactica run. I have pictures and memories of some of the toys from that time, one of them a disc-shaped Cylon ship that was recently sold in the Battlestar Galactica Online browser-based title. It's a pretty ship that's pretty maneuverable as well. The Cylon War Raider is a multi-role ship that can be upgraded to five weapon slots and is fast enough to chase down missiles. It can easily hold its own in a fleet. What a beauty, and it's mine.
