The Mysterious Quest is back and ready to get the ball rolling! Your feedback and what's next Added November 17th We’d like to thank you all once more for your feedback on the Phantom Boss rewards. Today we’d like to address some of the main points that have been raised since this blog was last updated. First of all, we’d like to talk about how your feedback has been handled. We’ve seen many comments around how we’ve not made any changes, even though it seems like there are some obvious ones we could have chosen to proceed with. We feel like this is a twofold issue. On one hand, we’ve done a poor job of setting the scene for the Phantom Boss and its expected difficulty, so gauging how powerful the rewards should be just hasn’t been possible. This has caused a fair amount of confusion and something we’re most certainly keeping in mind for future content pitches. On the other hand, we’re still transitioning from our previous polling approach to our newly announced way of handling content. As mentioned already in this blog, this is the first reward poll we've done since the Polling Changes went live. Admittedly, we did already have designs in mind so we're not following the new process exactly as we'd intend to in the future. Rest assured that our approach will be much more in line with the new Polling Changes for content we’re announcing during the Winter Summit! So, what should you expect from this Phantom Boss? Given it’s coming from a Master level quest, we’re not looking at Inferno level of difficulty! We think a fair comparison is a slightly more mechanical version of Vorkath, but with lower stats. You might have to focus a little more, but you’ll be able to shred through the boss much easier than you can against the beasty blue boi. For the quest variant of the Phantom Boss, we’re aiming for it to be bested by players with a Combat level of around 85. As for the post-quest version, you’ll likely want to have at least 95 Combat, though the higher level you are the better time you’re going to have! Bloodletter Bow We hope the above detail helps clarify why the bow has changed slightly in power level since a similar version was offered from Nex, and why we’re not looking to introduce unnecessary power creep given it comes from what will be a relatively accessible and farmable boss. The bow is not meant to be competing with the likes of the Twisted bow or Zaryte crossbow. It is intended to fill a niche of being able to hit multiple targets with heightened accuracy whilst offering a different approach from Chinchompas. We hope you’ll find it to be a really fun weapon to use! Aside from the perceived power level of the bow, we'd like to touch back on the "why bow though?" point many of you raised. Whilst we feel like a bow is better suited to this specific content, we understand how it doesn't feel overly community centric for us to be dictating that. As a result, we're going to be offering a variety of alternative Ranged options for you to choose from in the form of a few poll question. Let us know what you'd prefer to see! Soulblight Sceptre Many of the comments we’ve seen surrounding the sceptre are that the effects seem too weak and almost pointless to be offering. Again, with the above detail in mind, we hope this explains our reasoning for not wanting to make it too strong! Whilst increasing the effects of all Ancient Magicks by 10% might not seem so powerful on its own, its important to remember the sceptre also offers a hefty +5% Magic strength bonus. This makes it a direct upgrade from the Ancient staff and the new best-in-slot Magic weapon for autocasting Ancient Magicks before obtaining a Kodai wand or Nightmare staff. Should it pass the polls, it's important to note that this isn't the last you'll hear about the Soulblight sceptre... we know we're being overly elusive with this one, but we'll have more to share on this during the Winter Summit on December 10th! Saturated Heart We’ve seen your desire for the Saturated Heart to have a Divine Potion effect. Whilst we’d prefer it come from other content in the future, we feel like we can make it work with this update. As such, we’ll be offering it as an additional poll question. That’s all we’d like to cover for now. We hope this has helped quash some of the concerns you’ve raised. Added November 15th Thanks for all your feedback regarding the rewards we’re offering from the Phantom Boss in our mysterious upcoming quest. First up, we hear your comments about the Saturated Heart and the Magister’s Brew offering the same buffs, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. In response, we’ve reduced the effect of the Magister’s Brew to 3+8% of the player’s Magic level, down from the original 4+10%. We also considered giving the Saturated Heart the Divine Potion effect, but we believe it doesn’t quite suit the content. That’s not to say we won’t do anything similar in future! Although this is the only major content change, we do want to discuss some of the other concerns you’ve raised before we launch the poll for this content on Wednesday, November 16th. Please note that alongside these rewards we’ll also poll changes to the availability of Revenant weapons, as discussed here. Why another Ranged weapon and why is it another bow? As you know we already have plenty of Ranged gear in the game, including the recently-released Bow of Faerdhinen and the Masori Armour set from Tombs of Amascut. We understand that this looks like we’re focussing on Ranged combat, but in reality we’ve released a variety of gear over the past year or so – the Torva Armour, Ancient Godsword, Keris Partisan, Tumeken’s Shadow, Elidinis’ Ward… the list goes on! When you look at the full picture, Melee combat has actually had the most updates – and with the release of the new BIS Magic weapon, Magic is getting plenty of love too. Ultimately we only have three combat styles, which means we’re somewhat limited to the kinds of weapons we can offer! We’ve loved seeing your alternative designs for the Bloodletter Bow, and we’re definitely keen to try new approaches to weapon design in future – but for this specific content, we want to stick with the bow. It’s an effective, recognisable weapon type, and we like that the damage scales with your choice of arrows, which would be difficult to replicate with a ranged weapon that didn’t need ammo. Why is this going to be another charged weapon? We totally see where players are coming from here. We’ve got plenty of charged weapons in the game already, and sometimes the timesink to maintain them isn’t the fun experience we aim for. Sometimes the potential timesink created to maintain the weapon doesn't create a fun experience for players. Let's take the Scythe of Vitur for example, spending an hour creating Blood Runes doesn't equate to one hour's worth of charges for the Scythe, far less in fact. The maintenance becomes more of a chore than is potentially necessary. On the flip side, look at the Bow of Faerdhinen. Once you're done grinding, you’ve already got more than enough Crystal Shards to power it, which creates a feeling of accomplishment and makes maintenance basically irrelevant. As you can see, there’s a fine balance when it comes to charged weapons. We want to hit the sweet spot between ‘tedious grind’ and ‘I forgot you even had to charge this’. For the Bloodletter Bow, in particular, we feel that it’s only fair to have to maintain its charges to access its super-powerful weapon effect. Obviously we want to compensate you fairly for the time spent collecting the charges, so please give us the chance to create a fair and balanced charging system. This will be top of our list should this weapon pass the poll. How does the Bloodletter Bow's 'Bounce' effect select targets? The way this works is a bit unusual, so if you have a scroll to the end of the Bloodletter Bow section, you can view some helpful (if aesthetically displeasing) diagrams. If you’d rather shield your eyes (we don’t blame you), here’s a quick summary: The arrow checks for other NPCs within three tiles of the main target’s centre tile – that’s the exact middle for ‘odd sized’ NPCs (3x3, 5x5) but for ‘even-sized’ NPCs (2x2, 4x4) the centre is the tile north-east of the middle of the grid. If you wrote the numbers one through sixteen in a 4x4 grid, with one at the top left and sixteen at the bottom right, the centre tile would be number seven. If the arrow finds another NPC within range, it will then double-check that that NPC’s centre tile is within two tiles of the main target’s centre tile. If that check passes, the arrow will bounce. We do recommend having a look at the diagrams further down for a more visual representation of this mechanic. Once a target is selected, how is damage rolled on the Bloodletter Bow's 'Bounce' effect? Assuming the above conditions are met and you’ve got a bouncing arrow, the game performs an accuracy roll – your accuracy versus the target’s defence – for each bounce. If the bounced arrow hits, damage is rolled between 0 and 66% of your max hit. Effectively, this means that every hit beyond the first has a lower max hit but bear in mind that it could still deal more damage than the first hit if your initial damage roll was especially low. Note that even if the arrow misses on the first bounce, it will still aim to bounce a second time, and roll both accuracy and damage (from 0 to 66% of your max hit) again. For example, if your max hit is 40: You hit a 40 on Target A. Arrow bounces to Target B but misses. Arrow bounces to Target C and hits, dealing 26 damage. (Since damage for these rolls is capped at 66% of 40, this is a max hit!) If Target B had been hit instead of missed, Target B would also have been dealt damage, rolled between 0-26. We’ve added some more examples in the Bloodletter Bow and Soulblight Sceptre sections so you can get a full picture of how they work ahead of the polls. This new info is marked with an asterisk (*). Any new content will be marked with an * to indicate new pieces of information. As you no doubt remember, we recently released our first poll under the new polling strategy, and we’re pleased to announce that everything passed! From your feedback, it’s clear that you liked the more mysterious approach, but still wanted to hear all the juicy details about rewards and the like, once the initial poll has passed. Well, that time has arrived – so let’s take a peek at the rewards you can obtain from the mysterious phantom boss you’ll unlock at the end of An Even Smaller Favour. This is the first reward poll we've done since the Polling changes went live. Admittedly, we did already have designs in mind so we're not following the new process exactly as we'd intend to in the future. It’s going to take us a bit of time to adjust to the new process ourselves internally, but the aim is to involve you, the community, much sooner in the design process. This will mean you can have more say on what type of rewards are offered. For now though, we'd like to know how you feel about the following rewards. Take a look and let us know! Be aware that to keep the identity of our mysterious quest a secret, we've made some small tweaks to the thematics of the reward items we're offering below. Phantom Essence This tradeable, magical energy is left behind when the phantom boss is defeated and will be used to upgrade existing items into something more powerful. Essence-tially this is the core of the boss, so it’ll drop consistently every time you defeat it – so you’ll always have an ample supply to spend on new goodies! Bloodletter Shards and Bow The Bloodletter Shards are tradeable, broken fragments of a forgotten weapon left behind by a powerful individual. You can break these down into Phantom Essence or combine them to rebuild the epic Bloodletter Bow, a new, tradeable weapon. These bows were used by the Bloodletters – hunters and scouts from Gielinor’s far history, who wielded ranged weapons imbued with powerful magic. Requirements: 80 Ranged Stats for the Bloodletter Bow The cool thing about the Bloodletter Bow is that it can hit up to three targets with a single shot. Once the initial attack hits an NPC, the bow will try to fire another arrow into a nearby target, dealing 66% of the original damage. Then, the attack can bounce again, either to the original target or a third one nearby. *Remember that numbers in Old School almost always round down. Meaning if you hit a 30 on your initial target, any bounces will deal 19 damage. 66% of 30 is 19.8, which we round down to 19. ‘Bouncing’ arrows will only hit targets in a range of two squares from the target's centre tile (more on this in just a second!). Compare this to Chinchompas, which only hit a 3x3 area around the position of their target’s south-west coordinate, and only hit NPCs within the same range. For example: If an arrow hits Target A it will fire an arrow and attempt to damage a secondary NPC (Target B) within the area defined. If that hits the arrow will bounce back to Target A and will attempt to damage it. This is of course assuming you are in multi-combat and you can attack the other NPCs in that area. *Let's dig a little deeper into how the targeting works. *First up, we'll cover the basics. An arrow that hits Target A, will only attempt to hit Target B if Target B's centre tile is within 2 tiles of Target A. For even-sized NPCs (e.g. 2x2s), the centre tile is the north-east tile. *We've created these grids to help illustrate what's going on. Here's what each coloured square means: The blue square indicates the initial target, which we'll refer to as Target A. The purple squares indicate potential Target Bs, which are any NPC that is a valid 'bounce' target from Target A. The orange squares indicate potential Target Cs, which are any NPC that is a valid 'bounce' target from Target B. The black square represents an NPC out of range for any potential bounces. *With the above in mind, we can work through a few NPC sizes, starting at 1x1. *For the Bloodvelds shown above, you can see the significance of the centre tile being the north-eastern tile, since both the southern and western Bloodveld are 3 tiles from the centre tile of the middle Bloodveld and therefore out of range. *It's worth bearing in mind that arrows in the above diagram could bounce from one Target B to another, or even back to Target A. All that we're trying to illustrate is the range at which bounces can occur. *In the image above, the left visualises how the bow would work for 3x3 NPCs (Lizardman Shamans in this case. Don't worry, the 1/5,000 can't hurt you here...) which are just large enough to prevent any bounces to other 3x3s. Of course with some crafty movement you could probably stack some of these NPCs on top of each other, enabling a cheeky bounce or two, but this is how it would work if they were stood next to each other under normal circumstances. *Finally we threw together NPCs of various sizes to show off how the bow could interact in case you ever find yourself in a multi-combat situation battling Lizardman Shamans, Bloodvelds and Goblins simultaneously. We're not sure when this would ever happen to you, but hopefully the whole bounce targeting thing is a little clearer! The Bow can be charged with the Phantom Essence we mentioned earlier and will require those charges to fire the additional arrows. If you’re all out of Essence, you can still use it uncharged to fire a normal number of arrows. Shall we check out the comparison charts? A comparison chart for the Bloodletter Bow vs Ranged weapons. The Bloodletter Bow’s damage is comparable to the Toxic Blowpipe with Dragon Darts or the Twisted Bow with Dragon Arrows and 250 Magic DPS, if you hit your primary target twice. This comparison doesn’t factor in the additional DPS you deal to the second NPC in the equation. If you do factor in that extra DPS, the Bloodletter Bow becomes a significant update in terms of raw damage, although it’s mitigated by the inconsistency of that damage output. **This chart gives an approximate average on the targets shown. As explained previously, the rolls incorporate the defence of each target individually so it can vary a lot more than other weapons depending on which targets the bow selects. Poll Question #1: Should the Bloodletter Bow, a ranged weapon that excels at damaging multiple targets, be added as a drop from the mysterious new solo boss? Poll Question #2: If the Bloodletter Bow is added to the game, should it be in the form of a different Ranged weapon? The highest voted option will win and be added to the game. Option 1: Keep it as a bow Option 2: Change it to a thrown weapon Option 3: Change it to a Ballista Soulblight Icon and Sceptre On to our next deadly duo – the Soulblight Icon and Sceptre! The Soulblight Icon is an untradeable magical artefact that’s absolutely brimming with potential power. Take it to a specific NPC, and you’ll be able to combine it with the Ancient Staff to create the Soulblight Sceptre! This is an untradeable weapon that is designed to sit between the Ancient Staff and the Kodai Wand. It not only provides a +5% magic strength bonus, but also buffs the effects of all Ancient Magicks by 10%, this means the following: *Blood Magick: Healing from these spells becomes 10% more effective. This means that all spells will heal the caster with a base of 27.5% of the damage dealt (a 2.5% increase). The effect from the staff also stacks multiplicatively with Bloodbark Armour: (25% + (Bloodbark Armour)) x 1.1 = 32.5% x 1.1 = 35.75% Increased healing when wearing Bloodbark Armour and wielding the Soulblight Sceptre. *Ice Magick The freeze duration from these spells becomes 10% longer. Ice Rush - Does not benefit. Ice Rush is an 8 tick (4.8 seconds) freeze, a 10% increase would take this to 8.8 ticks and Old School always rounds down, so we're right back where we started! Ice Burst - 16 ticks (9.6 seconds) → 17 ticks (10.2 seconds) Ice Blitz - 24 ticks (14.4 seconds) → 26 ticks (15.6 seconds) Ice Barrage - 32 ticks (19.2 seconds) → 35 ticks (21 seconds) *Shadow Magick The stat drain effects from these spells are 10% more effective. Shadow Rush & Shadow Burst will reduce your opponent's Attack by 11%. Shadow Blitz & Shadow Barrage will reduce your opponent's Attack by 16%. *Smoke Magick: Increases the 'Poison Value' of these spells' Poison effect by 10% Poison Damage will be dealt 11 times before fading, instead of 10 when casting Smoke Rush & Smoke Burst. Poison Damage will be dealt 22 times before fading, instead of 20 when casting Smoke Blitz & Barrage. *All of these effects will be enabled in PvP situations, so they will be usable across the full range of content in-game. Requirements: 70 Magic 60 Strength Poll Question #3: Should the Soulblight Icon and Sceptre be added to the game? The Icon can be combined with the Ancient Staff to upgrade it into the more powerful Soulblight Sceptre. Saturated Heart Some rewards make your heart leap out of your chest. This reward is someone else’s heart. Delightful! Using a number of Phantom Essence on an Imbued Heart will transform it into the Saturated Heart, absolutely dripping with magical energy. Aside from being super gross, the Saturated Heart buffs Magic by 4 + 10% of the player’s base Magic level (rounded down). Although, a Saturated Heart will share a cooldown with the Imbued Heart, so you won't be able to use them both at the same time!. Poll Question #4: Should the Saturated Heart, an upgraded version of the Imbued Heart created by combining it with Phantom Essence, be added to the game? Poll Question #5: If the Saturated Heart is added to the game, should it also be given the Divine potion effect? This would prevent natural stat drain during the duration of the Saturated Heart's buff effect. Magister's Brew This new upgraded version of the Ancient Brew boosts the Magic Level higher than the Ancient Brew. Here's by how much: Ancient Brew = Boosts the player's Magic level by 2 + 5% of their base Magic level, as well as restoring prayer points equal to 2 + 10% of their base Prayer level (with the ability to restore up to 5% over the player's base Prayer level) *Magister's Brew = Boosts the player's Magic level by 3 + 8% of their base Magic level, as well as restoring prayer points equal to 2 + 10% of their base Prayer level (with the ability to restore up to 5% over the player's base Prayer level) Both potions will still drain the player's Attack, Strength and Defence levels by 2 + 10% of their current levels so drink responsibly! To cook up the Brew yourself, you’ll need 91 Herblore. You’ll get 145 Herblore XP per Brew. Mmm… good soup! Poll Question #6: Should Magister's Brews, an upgraded version of Ancient Brews created by combining them with Phantom Essence, be added to the game? That’s all that this mysterious entity has to offer, so now we want to hear from you! Tell us what you think of the new rewards and whether you’d like to see them in the game. Keen-eyed readers will observe we've changed the name since, as the lore for the minigame has now been finalised. So let’s pick up there: a fun, narratively exciting new minigame that serves as a brand-new method for training Runecraft: Guardians of the Rift! Should this pass a Poll, we expect the content to launch in March.Spoiler warning: Lore ahead! Click here to expand... The Abyss: a deadly realm filled with ancient power. The secrets of this plane have long eluded the denizens of the Wizards’ Tower, though some would give anything to properly uncover them. One of these wizards is Persten. While many in the Tower aren't convinced by her unorthodox methods, a recent discovery means she may now hold the key to the knowledge they crave the most. However, nothing is simple when the Abyss is involved, and Persten won't be able to get to the bottom of her discovery without your help... Members-only The Basics Early concept birdseye image of the Temple of the Eye, Guardians of the Rift minigame. This is WIP. The Guardians of the Rift minigame is non-instanced and non-combat, and therefore accessible for skillers. Upon entering the Guardians of the Rift minigame, you’ll be transported into the Temple of the Eye. As the game starts, you will see the rift into the Abyss starting to open across the room! Oh no! Fortunately, the wizards from the Wizards’ Tower are here to assist you. They will re-animate the Great Guardian in the middle of the room, so that it can try to close the rift. However, it’s pretty out-of-practice, and you must help protect it while it charges up enough power to close the rift. Around the Great Guardian, there are various entrances to Runecraft altars, corresponding to different Runes. When active, these entrances will let players pass through to the corresponding Altars, but only two entrances can be active at any one time. Outside of these entrances, there are two lanes: Elemental and Catalytic. Elemental runes are Air, Earth, Water and Fire. Any type of Rune that is not Elemental is classed as Catalytic – for reference, that’s the Mind, Body, Cosmic, Chaos, Nature, Law, Death and Blood Runes. As the Abyssal Rift opens, Abyssal Creatures will spawn. They won’t attack players, but they will go after the Great Guardian. Your job is to ensure that it reaches 100% charge and closes the rift on time by feeding it Imbued Essence. If the Great Guardian’s charge hits zero, it’s game over! It loses charge each time it is hit by an Abyssal Creature. However, you can help defend it by creating Rift and Shield Guardians from supplies found in the minigame.Click below to learn more about the Guardians. Click here to expand... Gameplay Guardians of the Rift has three distinct phases: Phase 1 In the first phase, which only lasts a short while, you’ll have some time to prepare before the Abyssal Creatures attack. You’ll want to focus on obtaining supplies – mining Essence Shards and collecting Uncharged Batteries which you can then use to create Rift Guardians and power up the Shield Guardians. To begin with, there are a limited supply of Air and Mind Batteries near the wizards that you can use as an initial defence. Phase 2 In the second phase, the rift will start to spawn Abyssal Creatures. You’ll need to combine the Essence Shards you’ve collected with Pure Essence to create Unimbued Essence, which you can then imbue at one of the Runecraft altars and bring to the Great Guardian. This will get you Runes and Runecraft XP – and it’ll also ensure the Great Guardian is charged up and ready for Phase Three. There’s a Bank available in the minigame area where you can fetch Pure Essence during battle. Phase 3 In this final phase, even more dangerous mobs will start spawning from the rift. Your Shield Guardians will take a lot of damage, so you’ll need to focus on charging up the Great Guardian with Imbued Essence while still maintaining the Great Guardian's defences. Essence Shards Essence Shards are a new material found only within the Guardians of the Rift minigame. Various nodes of different sizes can be mined for Essence Shards – so be sure to bring your Pickaxe! Larger nodes are located further away from the lanes and will yield more Essence Shards for your troubles. There are also some nodes on the very edge of the arena – but you’ll need to use Agility to scale the steep slope leading up to them. Occasionally, portals will spawn to take players to the outer wall areas, where you can obtain more Essence Shards. These portals completely bypass the Agility requirement mentioned above, and you don’t need to meet that requirement to get back to the main arena either. However, the portals spawn randomly and disappear quickly, so it's certainly more reliable to use the Agility shortcut if you can! Nodes aren’t the only source of Essence Shards. When your Rift Guardians tragically fall in battle, their corpses can be mined for a moderate amount of Essence. If left unmined, their fallen bodies will lay on the ground and temporarily block the path, until they are cleared automatically or removed by Abyssal Creatures. Now it’s time to think strategically – is it better to obtain Essence or benefit from the extra blocking while you catch your breath? You can combine Essence Shards with Pure Essence to create Unimbued Essence (which can be stored in Essence Pouches). To do so, jump through an Elemental or Catalytic portal to create Imbued Essence at a Runecraft altar. Once you have Imbued Essence, you can use it to charge up the Great Guardian and gain lots of lovely XP! The amount awarded will vary depending on which type of Imbued Essence you're using - the higher the Runecraft requirement, the better your XP. You’ll also get XP and Runes just for creating the Imbued Essence at the altars. Essence Shards can also be used to power up the Shield Guardians initially. Now, though, let’s talk about Batteries. Charged Batteries Wizards are stationed throughout the minigame area, and a crate nearby will have some uncharged Batteries from their supplies. Make sure to pick one up as you pass – you’ll need it! Uncharged Batteries need to be charged at a Runecraft altar before they can become charged. The charge will be either Elemental or Catalytic, depending on which type of altar you used. Charged Batteries can be used to charge and upgrade the Shield Guardians and Rift Guardians. Batteries will also make the Rift Guardians hit harder. The tier of the Battery changes when it’s charged, corresponding to the Runecraft level of the altar used. Here’s a table to illustrate how that works: Type Tier Elemental/Catalytic Air 1 Elemental Water 2 Elemental Earth 3 Elemental Fire 4 Elemental Mind 1 Catalytic Chaos 2 Catalytic Death 3 Catalytic Blood 4 Catalytic The Shield Guardians and Rift Guardians must be upgraded in the correct order, starting from Air or Mind and upgrading one tier at a time. If a lesser Battery is used on the Guardian, it won't go to waste - it will heal the Guardian and give you a small amount of XP. The XP gains for healing and upgrading are the same. The higher the tier, the more HP the Guardian will have. Portal Talismans When you are imbuing something at an altar, you will have an uncommon chance to receive a Portal Talisman, allowing you to take another trip back to that altar! They’re perfect for when you want to go back to an altar that just closed. Portal Talismans will not carry over from game to game, so use ‘em or lose ‘em! Experience Rates This minigame is not instanced, meaning only one game will be played per world at any one time. Players will gain small amounts of Runecraft XP throughout Guardians of the Rift. After successfully completing a round, players will receive a large amount of Runecraft XP, so it’s worth sticking around to get that win! The ballpark XP rates, compared with other training methods, are as follows: Method XP Rate per hour GP rate per hour Intensity ZMI 25,000 - 54,000 (scales with level) Low (~200,000 - 300,000) Low-Mid Blood Runes 35,000-40,000 (plus 5,000 Mining and 6,000 Crafting) Low (~400,000 – 500,000) Very Low Soul Runes 45,000 – 50,000 (plus 5,000 Mining and 6,000 Crafting) Low (~200,000 – 300,000) Very Low Lava Runes 75,000 – 80,000 None (costs ~100,000 – 150,000) Very High Guardians of the Rift (Proposal, subject to balancing) 20,000 – 60,000 (scales with level) Low (~400,000 – 500,000) Medium As you can see, Guardians of the Rift fits neatly in with existing methods. XP scales, as with ZMI and provides better XP than Bloods and Souls at their respective levels, but less than Lava Runes. The GP rates are comparable to Blood Runes. On top of this, it’s an engaging minigame with lots of small decisions to be made throughout. Poll Question #2: If Poll Question #1 passes, should we add the Guardians of the Rift minigame? This is a brand new Runecraft minigame designed to fit alongside existing methods. Rewards The Reward Rift After successfully completing a game, you’ll will accumulate Elemental and Catalytic Energy. The amount awarded depends on your specific actions in the minigame. Rewards are earned by spending one of each point (Elemental and Catalytic) to reach into an Abyssal Rift and receive a random reward! Runes (General Loot Table) Runes, glorious Runes! The standard loot table includes an assortment of ‘em, awarded based on your contribution to the minigame. It will be random, but we are also investigating how this reward could scale with Runecraft levels. Please note that Wrath Runes will not be available at all from the minigame. Standard Talismans (General Loot Table) The standard loot table also includes any type of Talisman, with some exceptions: it will not include the Wrath Talisman, and it will only drop the Death Talisman if the player has completed Mourning’s End pt. II. The Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop also contains all standard Talismans, but we want to ask whether it should stock Blood Talismans. Items within the Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop are purchasable using Abyssal Pearls (more on this below).While we’re on the topic, we're also introducing the Catalytic Talisman to the Reward Rift. This will count for any non-Elemental Runecraft altar, giving its lucky owner access to some of the most sought-after altars. Additionally, the Catalytic Talisman will grant players access to the true Blood Altar in Morytania (requiring Sins of the Father to enter). Juicy! Please note, the Catalytic Talisman will only allow access to the Death Altar for those who have completed Mournings End Pt. II and the Wrath Altar only for those who have completed Dragon Slayer II. The Catalytic Talisman is a rare drop from the Reward Rift. New Talismans (Talismen?) means new Tiaras! Both the new Catalytic Talisman and the existing Elemental Talisman can be melded with a Gold Bar to create two new Tiaras. Fashionable and practical! Poll Question #3: Should the Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop stock Blood Talismans? Poll Question #4: Should we introduce a new Catalytic Talisman as a rare drop in the Guardians of the Rift Rewards Rift? Poll Question #5: If the Catalytic Talisman is added to the game, should it grant access to the true Blood Altar in Morytania? It would require Sins of the Father to enter. Poll Question #6: Should we introduce two new Tiaras, craftable by combining a Catalytic or Elemental Talisman with a Gold Bar? Abyssal Pearls Abyssal Pearls are a new type of currency which can be used in the Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop. They are obtained from the Rewards Rift, so the amount you will receive will depend on your contribution to the minigame. Guardians of the Rift Pet When the Tempoross minigame came out last year, it came with a brand-new pet. We want to do the same here, but there’s already an existing Rift Guardian pet, so we’re still discussing what this new pet could be. We’re torn between a version of the Great Guardian or your very own Abyssal Creature! We'd like to hear your feedback about which you'd prefer. Obviously this is a bit difficult when we don’t yet have the models to share with you, but let us know your initial impression. If we do go for the Great Guardian option, rest assured we’ll work to make it look different to the existing Rift Guardian pet! Poll Question #7: Should we introduce a new pet from the Rewards Rift in the Guardians of the Rift minigame? Abyssal Needle (to create a brand-new Colossal Pouch) The Abyssal Needle is used to craft a new Runecraft Pouch. It’s an upgrade from the Giant Pouch and requires 85 Runecraft to use. The table below outlines how it compares to other Runecraft Pouches: Type Runecraft Level Capacity Cumulative Capacity Uses before decay Small Pouch 1 3 3 No decay Medium Pouch 25 6 9 45 Large Pouch 50 9 18 29 Giant Pouch 75 12 30 11 Colossal Pouch 85 40 40 8 The Colossal Pouch is made by using the Abyssal Needle on any of the other Pouches while you have them all in your Backpack, essentially stitching them together like some sort of abominable Frankenpouch. Making it requires 56 Crafting and consumes the Abyssal Needle, but players can get another by using a regular Needle on the Reward Rift. You cannot get other Pouches in addition to the Colossal Pouch. The Colossal Pouch will have a knock-on effect for other Runecraft methods by slightly increasing XP/hr, and it means fewer Pouches to click. Should this pass the poll, we will make sure the Colossal Pouch counts for the Devious Minds quest. Poll Question #8: Should we introduce an Abyssal Needle, obtainable via the Rewards Rift in the Guardians of the Rift minigame? This would allow players to stitch existing Runecraft Pouches together to create a Colossal Pouch, requiring 85 Runecraft and 56 Crafting to use. Abyssal Lantern The Abyssal Lantern is an offhand item held in the shield slot, and you can pick one up at the Reward Shop. It requires Firemaking to use. It gives various benefits during Guardians of the Rift based on which logs are used to light it. It can be lit by using two of the logs listed in the table below, if the player has the Firemaking level required. There’s a Bank in the minigame to facilitate this. Log Type Firemaking Level Required Bonus Normal 1 Your chances of finding portal shards is increased by 10%. Oak 15 Increases your reward points gained by 5%. Willow 30 Gives a 5% increase to all runes that are crafted within the minigame. Maple 45 Your chances of finding portal shards is increased by 20%. Yew 60 Increases your reward points gained by 10%. Blisterwood 62 Gives a 15% increase to blood runes crafted within the minigame. Magic 75 Gives a 10% increase to all runes that are crafted within the minigame. Redwood 90 Increases your reward points gained and runes crafted by 5%, also your runecraft pouches will no longer degrade within the minigame The Lantern will last five games in a row, meaning ten logs are required to fully charge it, and it will lose two logs worth of charge per game. It can be lit outside but provides no benefits. Poll Question #9: Should we introduce the Abyssal Lantern as a reward from the Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop? This would be an offhand that allows bonuses in the Guardians of the Rift minigame, using logs to offer different types of bonuses. Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop The Guardians of the Rift Rewards Shop allows you to spend any Abyssal Pearls you’ve earned on powerful goodies! It will include all Standard Talismans, as well as the following unique rewards: Runecraft Skilling Outfit This offers players increased yield in the number of Runes they can craft. It’s more focussed on increasing the profit you can make while training Runecraft, as opposed to making it faster to gain XP. The Outfit consists of four pieces of gear: Helm, Chest, Legs and Boots. The inclusion of the Hat means you’d have to make the choice between that and your Catalytic or Elemental Tiara when working at certain altars. But what if you could add the Catalytic or Elemental Tiaras to the Hat? You can change them out as you please. This would allow you to rock the new outfit while still having a one-click access to those Runecraft altars! Each piece has a 10% bonus chance to craft additional Runes, going up to a total of 60% when all pieces are worn. The Runecraft Skilling Outfit has the potential to alleviate problems that players experience with obtaining Blood Runes – at the very least for those who have already achieved Level 77 Runecraft or above. This won't solve the issue for players who don't have the required Runecraft levels to create Blood Runes, but Guardians of the Rift should help to make Runecrafting generally more accessible and engaging in the earlier levels, and thus make achieving these milestones a lot more realistic for everyone. We hear your concerns that Blood Runes can be tedious to obtain through shops. The new outfit would improve yield of Runes, which can be very powerful when combined with access to the true Blood altar. Additionally, with the release of Nex, we released Blood Essence, which also provides a hefty boost to blood Runecrafting! While this still won't be faster than buying Runes from shops, we feel this is a more engaging way of obtaining a lot of them, and much faster than other existing methods. Poll Question #10: Should we introduce a new Runecraft Skilling Outfit as explained in the Guardians of the Rift blog, obtainable via the Guardians of the Rift Rewards shop? Ring of the Elements The Ring of the Elements stores many teleport charges and can teleport players to various Runecraft-related locations. The idea came from a player suggestion to create an 'infinite' Ring of Dueling, but instead of teleporting the player to the Duel Arena, Ferox Enclave and Castle Wars, the latter of which doesn't really relate to Runecraft, it would take you near each of the four Elemental altars. This gives easier access to the Air, Earth, Fire and Water altars to increase the amount of Runes you can craft! This ring will require a Law Rune and one of each Elemental Rune per charge. The maximum number of charges stored is 10,000. Teleport locations: Fire Altar: Outside of the Duel Arena gates. Water Altar: West of the Water Altar. Air Altar: South of the Air Altar. Earth Altar: South of the Earth Altar. The Water, Air and Earth teleports will be slightly further away from their respective Altars than the Fire teleport. We think that this item might have some use in free-to-play, and we are happy to poll this as a separate question to see what you think. This could increase the value of the item whilst also giving non-members new teleports they do not currently have access to.
